She possesses a violent and mean streak not displayed by her sisters.ĭuring the birth of the girls in The Powerpuff Girls Movie, she was initially shown to look extremely happy with wide eyes and an open mouthed smile up to the point where, last of the three girls, Professor Utonium said he would name her Buttercup because, like both of her sisters' names, it also begins with a B. In the episode "Nuthin Special," her special "ability" is revealed to be the ability to curl her tongue (Blossom and Bubbles cannot do this, nor can anyone else in Townsville). For example, in the episode "Cover Up," she had a soft green blanket that she was obsessed with that she would hug that gave her the confidence to be a better fighter, and she is quite protective over her sisters. She has shown these sides, and a softer side in several episodes. ![]() She also showed a greedy side in "Moral Decay," which she knocked out teeth for the sole purpose of obtaining money. ![]() Sometimes this, and her aggression get the better of her simultaneously, making her a little reckless and stubborn (but she overcame it in "Makes Zen To Me"). Referred to in the ending theme as "the toughest fighter," she is the group's tough member and is easily enraged. She wears a green sleeveless dress which has a black stripe running through the middle, white socks and black Mary Jane shoes. However, in "Cover Up," she shows a softer side.īuttercup is a 5-year-old girl, the tomboy sister, with black hair and green eyes. Her main ingredient is spice which reflects her being very tough. She still believes she can fight monsters without taking a bath until a monster forcedly surrendered and leave her because she stinks causing Buttercup to reluctantly taking a bath because she wants to fight monsters. Her arrogantly beliefs has cause her family, friends and the entire citizens of forcing her to take a hike due to her being dirty. It proves to girls of all ages that they can be just as flawed as anyone else, they can have traits that are typically considered negative, and they can still be a hero. So, for a cartoon created in the 90s about three superhero girls in kindergarten, showing a girl character with such aggressive and often dislikable personality traits who was still able to play such an essential role in saving the day is important. With an exception of a select few, most of the women have less obvious flaws or flaws that are considered feminine like trust issues, or stubbornness – which, let’s face it, is only considered a flaw if you’re a woman. Yet, at the end of the comic or movie they are able to overcome those flaws, pull it together, and save the day. Considering she is the toughest fighter of the three, I would have assumed her ranking to be higher.īuttercup doesn’t fit the standard girl role. I have to admit, I was a bit surprised at this. When Googling Buttercup, I found that was listed as the tritagonist, the third most important in the trio. There was Blossom, the brainy and logical one Bubbles, the whimsical, sweet one and Buttercup, the tomboy of the group. Sugar, spice, and everything nice, with just a dash of that mysterious Chemical X we all know what went into making the three Powerpuff girls. ![]()
